посл.lit. the pikes are in the sea so that crucians shouldn't dream; dangers keep people on the alert- Значит, и такое, по-твоему, время придёт, когда и щук не будет? (М. Салтыков-Щедрин, Карась-Идеалист) — 'Do you mean to say that a time will come when there won't be pikes?' 'What pikes?' the crucian inquired naively. Whenever he heard people say: 'The pikes are in the sea so that crucians shouldn't dream,' he regarded it as a fairy-tale, a bogey for frightening children, and of course never feared it very much.
